Geneva more expensive ? not always (watch out for Ferney-Voltaire)
Switzerland is known for offering a good quality of life; this comes at a price: most consumer goods and especially groceries are more expensive in Switzerland than in other European countries. However, behind that general statement, it is still possible to find cheaper products - at least in Geneva. Examples below with groceries.
Organic hemp seeds - Migros vs Satoriz prices
I recently started to add hemp seeds to my diet. I read a lot about that because these are full of nutrients, deprived of THC and tasty.
I wanted to add them easily to my salads so I went looking for hemp seeds hearts, secretly hoping their price would be reasonable.
Migros - organic hemp seed hearts: 500g cost 5.60 CHF

Not even thinking of getting the hemp seeds in Switzerland in the first place because of the potentially high price, I bought a first box in a herbal shop close to Cornavin for 7.9 CHF.
But a couple of weeks after, I came across a box of hemp hearts in Migros, half a pound, for 5.6 CHF. I could not believe it so I took two, in case it was a mistake ! These seeds are organic and taste okay. Let me remind you that 5.6 Swiss francs equal about 4.9 Euros, at the moment. |
It is a good thing that Migros sometimes, although rarely, is able to offer reasonable prices and often specific reductions on the cost of groceries.
Satoriz - organic hemp hearts: 250g sold for 7.8€ !

Couple of days later, I was wandering through the Satoriz grocery store aisles in Ferney-Voltaire and I got surprised to see than less than 300 grams are sold for almost 10 euros ! For your information, this is about 9 CHF.
It looks like those organic shops try to rip off the customer on account of "we are organic so we have to be pricy". Especially for Satoriz Ferney-Voltaire that has such high price tags but a pretty rough shop in terms of presentation, cleanliness, etc... |
They will have to pay more attention to the service because people aren't stupid but able to compare: why would I travel all the way to Ferney if I can get equivalent and only slightly more in Geneva.

Which one is the cheapest: Ferney-Voltaire (France) or Geneva (Switzerland) ?
Actually the comparison has to be made product by product. I also noticed that anchovies were far more expensive in Satoriz compared to Manor.
That experience of comparing the prices of groceries in the two cities, Geneva and Ferney-Voltaire, is mainly relevant to say we should not draw definitive conclusions. It has to be noted that the cities of Ferney-Voltaire, Prevessin-Moens, the cost of living has increased significantly due to the proximity of Geneva. Most international civil servants and UN employees are probably privileged enough but with a French income and a tight budget, that becomes tough.
