How to notarize or legalize a document in Switzerland ?

How to notarize or legalize a document in Switzerland ?

If you need to notarize a document, you might be surprised at the word at first but relax - this is actually a simple procedure. If you need to do it, here are a couple of explanations on who can help.

What does it mean to notarize a document ?

Legalize or Notarize a document is simply having a signature attested by a notary or another government agent.
In other words, the authority notarizing a document will only acknowledge the signature as being yours: that authority cannot be liable for anything written on the document. Understanding that was a relief as I was already sweating seeing myself explaining a document written in another language to people in Switzerland, have them understand it and agree...

Who can notarize a document in Geneva, Switzerland ?

Actually, as advised, I initially tried to have the document notarized by public agents easily reachable but was unsuccessful.
I eventually got it. There is two ways to go about it:

1. Go to a notary - not too expensive

I perused the website listing the notaries in Suisse Romande (french speaking Switzerland) and picked one notary, the closest to my place. I called them and said they would charge 40 CHF (actually the price for notarizing a document ranges from 15 CHF to 100 CHF).
So it is actually much easier than thought.

2. Use the "Service des Legalisations" from the Canton de Geneve

There another way to notarize a document. You can go to the City Office of the Population and have a document legalized and / or notarized on the spot, or through mail. Currently the office is located here:

Office cantonal de la population et des migrations
Service état civil et légalisations
Case postale 2265
1211 Genève 2
