Save up to 80% on TPG cross-border bus tickets to France

For people who occasionnally cross the border to Haute-Savoie in France (Moillesulaz border towards Gaillard, Ambilly and Annemasse) using public transportation: here is a hack to save 80% on a single ticket by doing this...

The problem: paid too much for TPG cross border bus ticket

When you board bus 61 at the Geneva Cornavin train station, you may ask the driver for a ticket to get to France. In most cases, the bus driver will refuse to sell you tickets but will redirect you to the TPG ticket vending machine present everywhere in and around the train station.

Please note the 61 bus drivers aren't allowed to sell tickets based on agreements between Switzerland and France.

When you get to the machine and buy the supplemental ticket (Moillesulaz border-Annemasse for instance), you are charged 2.5€ or 2.8 Chf. However, in France, the same ticket is worth 1.4€.
So it looks like the customer is charged additional process fees here.

The solution: save 80% on that cross border bus ticket by doing this...

What you should do is wait until you get to the border (Moillesulaz) to buy that extra ticket to the bus driver (he is allowed at this stage), you will be charged only 1.4€, which represents a 80% discount compared to the swiss price for the same ticket.

Please also note that the combined tickets (zone 10 Geneva + France) does not exist on the Moillesulaz side.

To understand more about the combined or cross-border bus tickets (zone 82, 84, etc...), read this article.
