Tourism at no cost: your free guided hikes to the Salève

New to Geneva and interested in a free guided hike ("randonnée") to the Saleve ? Here is how it works. Mountains lovers offer this free tourist excursion every week: find out, so you don't miss out.

The Salève is the mountain closest to Geneva and is a prime tourist attraction for newcomers: close and easy and cheap to access. The  Salève is located in France, in the Haute Savoie county. Although there is a cable-car leading to the top (altitude of 1379m), many wish they could hike to the top.

Free Salève hiking every Sunday in Geneva

Well, it is actually possible to get a free guide that will show you the trail, every Sunday, come rain or shine, with the Association Genevoise des Amis du Saleve (AGAS). A group of 10 to 50 people courageously engage in a 5 to 8 hours hike, with an a +800m elevation gain. I think it is a great thing that they support the tourism through that initiative, I see here the real "mountainer" spirit.

Meeting point for the free Saleve hike

Just turn up on Sunday, no need to register.
At the final stop of bus  8, "Veyrier-Douane" - this bus can be caught in Geneva Cornavin.
Adress: Route du Pas de l'Echelle 111, 1255 Veyrier

Gear for the trail

This is getting quite technical: hiking shoes, hike jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, trekking poles are a couple of items needed to hike in good conditions
(I am no hiker, so the list may not be complete)

My experience in free hiking

For those with no experience in hikes, I share here a couple of thoughts I find important:

  • good hiking equipment is a must ! do not necessarily go for the cheapest as shoes must be comfortable enough to be worn several hours
  • assess the difficulty of the trail before starting: people who do that on a regular basis tend to walk relatively fast and for security reasons, the group needs to stay compact, not spread over kilometers, for the benefit of all. Similarly, some trail paths include ladders and other elements not all can handle.
  • pack smart: use good technical hiking clothing in layers, so you can easily  remove or add a layer when temperature changes (as it often does on the mountain)
  • need to be in good health condition: ideally weekly practice both muscular and cardio; but keep in mind each sport develops specific capabilities
Benefit from free hiking guided excursions in Geneva to discover a beautiful scenery, get to meet people and add extra body movement
