Carpooling (“covoiturage”): the best deal for paying less for transportation
This is my fave way of traveling within Switzerland. As mentioned above, I don’t know of a bus company operating exclusively within the Swiss territory. However, there are a lot of young people coming from neighbouring France going to work to all kind of places in Switzerland. To lower their transportation costs, they often take on board 2 to 3 passengers. This is a win-win situation as each party gets something: reduced gas and toll costs for the driver, and cheaper travel for the passengers. The most active site I know of is Blablacar: there you can find Geneva-Zurich. Geneva-Lausanne, Geneva-Fribourg, etc…On top of that, I always make nice encounters.
I hear some of you (why do I hear women louder? ;-) already dreading creepy co-travelers, etc...Good service is somehow guaranteed by the feedback system on the website: nobody, passenger nor driver, has any interest in having negative feedback on the website, especially if they intend to use the site in the future.

It goes without saying that the railway system is Geneva works almost perfectly with clean, pleasant trains arriving on time. But this comes at a price not all can afford.
