Information on General Services positions

General Service staff is locally recruited, and the work usually consists in supporting the administrative aspects of the work performed at the UN. The tasks are usually highly procedural. It looks like most "G staff" work assisting teams, coordinators and directors in Geneva. G staff working as team assistants get really busy when organizing meetings with external participants. Assistants to Directors get extremely busy processing the request flow coming from the teams.

It is however very different in other countries. For example, in a large Asian country, "G staff" do the work "P staff" would do in Europe, because of the competition and the large number of highly qualified staff.
